Rheden community
Rheden is situated along the river IJssel, in the province of Gelderland. It consists of 7 villages which, in total, have approximately 45.000 inhabitants. Rheden is a community with a long history and many monuments, and is best known for its nature; it is a ´green´ community. Areas of Rheden are part of National Park ´Veluwezoom´.

History
The community of Rheden was established in 1573. The name Rheden is derived from the word Rheton. That name was given to the locality of Rheden which, at the time, had more inhabitants than the village of Velp. There was a lot of plundering and pilaging at that time - the 80-years war had just begun.
Therefor the activities of the individual village communities were mainly in the field of law and order. In times of war, when the local population often felt threatened, they searched for protection inside castle walls. Castle Biljoen in the village of Velp was built as a defensive fort. It was built in de 16th century; the French ´Sun king´ Louis XIV once stayed here.

Recreation
There are plenty possibilities for outdoor recreation in Rheden. You will find woods, hills, water and farmland which you can all explore walking, biking, riding, or by boat (river IJssel). A list of possible passtime spendings.
